The Florissant Police Department requested the assistance of the Major Case Squad in investigating the death of Sandra Kaelin. At approximately 2:54pm, officers responded to the 700 block of Thompson Drive for a report of an unidentified body. There officers located Sandra Kaelin (age 41) lying in the grass near the edge of the woods. She had been strangled, stabbed, and beaten and was pronounced dead on scene.
As a result of this investigation, Steven Mates (age 40) was charged with Murder 1st Degree and Armed Criminal Action. He was arrested on a no-bond warrant.
